NOVEMBER 2005 SUNOASIS JOBLOG

Young writers and journalists write here all the time asking how they can start getting clips. I just discovered Greatreporter.com. It looks like an English site. It allows journalism students and others to post articles to be able to take clips to a job interview. There's a registration to fill out but they appear to have good forums.

Signs of the time if you can read them:

Bloggers are monetizing themselves. "Open Source Media, an experiment in online media combining blogs and journalism, launched Wednesday after landing more than 70 contributors and $3.5 million in funding."

Meanwhile......

Five newspapers from the Tribune group, including the Los Angeles Times, are cutting editorial staff."

Journalism students are still caught in the pinch as staffs are cut and only a precious few of the bloggers get traction online. Don't overlook freelance writing as an option.

The University of North Carolina at Wilmington has a list of the 15 ways employees find new hires. Some of the ways are obvious but others, like using student organizations and clubs, are not.

I like the spirit of Bob Baker's Newsthinking."If newspapers are going to die, as most "smart" people seem to think, let's go down swinging. Let's go down like the Texans at the Alamo. Let's publish the best, most interesting, most audacious stories we can, on our own terms. Let's not be businessmen. Let's be artists."

There's a convenient way to follow the layoffs in journalism and writing jobs. Use this updated listing from I Want Media. The latest cuts come from the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. 130 jobs will be cut, saving the paper $7 million. The majority of cuts are through early-retirement packages.

You might check out the new Conde Naste publication slated to launch next year. They plan on hiring 100 new staff members.
