Yvette Tan, a writer from the Philippines,
explains the five myths about freelance writing. It's universal isn't it?
A college paper reports some of the marketable majors and some less than marketable, including journalism. However, if you scroll down the page you'll see something very illuminating.
"Jim Stovall, journalism professor, said journalism majors have skills that will continue to make them marketable.
“I have never experienced that people who can write and gather information have had trouble finding a job,” Stovall said. “People who can write well have a skill that not many people have.”
The market shifts but the need for clear writing and some form of editing is an eternal part of the market.

According to this report from CNN
more businesses are using freelance work than ever before. Of course, there are more freelancers as well. "More companies are using freelancers because their businesses are becoming more project-based, one expert said."

I think what journalism students
will find out is that "if it's hard at the beginning it will be good at the end..." If the outlook for journalists is bleak now and yet they persist and push through the lay-offs, the pessimism, the newspaper decline, the huge recession then they may be the ones who see the sky clear down the road.
