Writers who want to freelance are sometimes confused by the fact that they are not employees but business people or independent contractors who must view the gig quite differently than if they were in the employ of someone.

Even though this article is very brief several important points should be noted:

  • Begin building up an inventory of content.
  • Though it may seem counter-intuitive for some people, networking with other online writers is helpful. The more you help other people, the more it comes back to you.

"The wonderful thing about being a writer—and there aren’t that many wonderful things, as you know—is that if you have a job and you lose that job, you can still write."

For an update in what is happening in journalism education read this substantial article.

"Broadly, each of these programs, and many existing ones, emphasize the need to focus on interdisciplinary collaboration, train students for the next generation of media outlets, prepare them with the necessary background in ethics and practice, and decouple journalism from any particular medium — ideally, to train journalists who can, if needed, write for the Web in the morning, deliver a TV report in the evening and produce multimedia, interactive projects in the meantime."

How about the state of freelance writing in Malaysia?
