DESCRIPTION:

The Centre for Communication Studies invites applications for a tenure track position in Electronic Publishing that will commence August 15, 2006. The College is seeking candidates with a focus on teaching and learning. It provides the opportunity for participation in course development, scholarly pursuits, and service. The Electronic Publishing program is an applied degree that integrates classroom learning and practical experience. Students learn how to use the most recent editions of industry standard software and how to adapt to new challenges and advances in technology. The aim of the Electronic Publishing stream in the Bachelor of Applied Communications degree is to produce a communications generalist with extensive knowledge of the publishing industry, including both traditional and new media. The successful applicant in this evolving position will work across program lines and be involved in curriculum development in both a practical and theoretical context. In addition, they will be familiar with the principles of information design and understand how defining, planning, and shaping the contents of a message and the context it is presented in achieves particular objectives in relation to the needs of users. In short, they will understand publishing and the theory and practice u! nderlying how information is created, organized and used.

The successful applicant is required to teach two courses in document production (introductory and advanced), and at least two courses in the following: Publication Markets and Distribution; Digital Illustration; Digital Photography, Pre-press Technique, and the History of Publishing. Teaching in Document Production will involve overseeing production of a publication in print and on-line versions. Publication Markets and Distribution surveys the major issues in the marketing and costing of publications, both print-based and electronic. Depending upon qualifications, the successful applicant may have the opportunity to teach in other majors in the Bachelor of Applied Communications degree. The ideal candidate will have educational qualifications at the graduate level, and industry experience.
