Managing Editor of Best Friends Magazine

Location: Kanab, Utah

Manage and edit Best Friends magazine and other literature for the sanctuary and the No More Homeless Pets campaign.

You have wide journalistic experience, and you can't wait to get your hands on Best Friends magazine! You can cover all the bases, from writing and editing materials, to copy-editing the text as it comes in, to managing the schedule. You're a hound for news, have a nose for detail, and are almost as passionate about rescuing stray commas as you are about stray dogs and cats. Programs like InDesign and InCopy are a breeze to you.

You've done it all in the professional journalistic world, and now you want to do it for the animals.

Responsibilities include:

  • Taking the reins of the editorial process of Best Friends magazine and our other publications.
  • Managing the schedule, pulling the stories together, copy-editing and proofing, too.
  • Working harmoniously and effectively with magazine production and editorial staff. (We're always up against six deadlines.)

Skills needed:

  • Extensive experience in journalism and in running a successful magazine or newspaper.
  • Very strong writing and editing skills.
  • Strong technical skills, and proficiency with the latest publishing software.
  • Copy-editing and proofreading experience.
  • The initiative and creative ability to improve upon the Best Friends approach and style.
  • Attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
  • Proven ability to meet deadlines.
  • Flexibility; the ability to manage multiple projects and work a flexible schedule.
  • Good interpersonal skills; the ability to work well with the magazine staff.
